Hypernode offers hosting support for Magento 1 for at least the rest of 2020

On June 1, 2020, Adobe ended support for all Magento 1.x versions. As a hosting provider, we will continue to support the software needed to host Magento 1.x shops until at least the end of 2020.

What is the impact of Magento 1’s end-of-life status on hosting?

The end-of life-status of Magento 1.x impacts hosting providers in two ways:

1. Because Adobe will not release any more security fixes, Magento 1.x shops will be easy prey for attackers. Once inside, they can also grant themselves access to the server. In cases of shared hosting environments, this means other webshops on the server will also be in danger. Hypernode eliminates this risk by virtually isolating our hosting environments. The Hypernode platform architecture allows us to host insecure shops without endangering our other clients.
2. As time goes on, Magento 1.x will become less and less compatible with other software. One example here would be PHP. For the security and quality of the hosting platform, it is vital to update this software regularly and retire insecure versions. This is indeed a challenge for us, as we do not enjoy keeping old software available on our platform.

Business-as-usual for at least the rest of 2020

Until the end 2020, you will not see any change in our services. It’s business-as-usual until then.

This means we will continue to offer PHP 5.6, PHP 7.0 and PHP 7.1 for the rest of 2020 for as long as we can do so responsibly.

It also means you can still call/email/text us with your Magento 1 shop for hosting questions or advice at any time. In this case, please bear in mind that you are working with outdated software, and you may experience increasing issues that could affect the functionality of your hosting.

We will also keep informed concerning the latest initiatives related to Magento 1.

And after 2020?

At this time, the number of clients using Magento 1 is still greater than the risk we are running as a hosting provider. But the tipping point is on the horizon. When it will arrive is anyone’s guess however. This is due to the numerous initiatives aiming to take over support for Magento 1, such as MageOne and OpenMage. An important factor is compatibility with server software like PHP. So it is not written in stone that it will no longer be possible to host a Magento 1 shop on a Hypernode after 2020.

However, if you want to make certain that you will be able to host your Magento 1 shop on a Hypernode after 2020 as well, be sure to update to PHP 7.2. That is the last version of PHP that still offers compatibility with Magento 1. We may well ask you to start running at least that version of PHP after 2020, because we no longer want to risk running older versions of PHP.

Look into community initiatives or switch to Magento 2 or Shopware

Learn about the initiatives that want to take over support for Magento 1, such as MageOne and OpenMage. They have set themselves the task of continuing to secure the Magento 1 core, and are working on the challenge of compatibility with other software. However, it is not yet clear how this will turn out, or whether it will be futureproof. We cover this in further detail in our Magento blog: 1 End-of-life: why you really do need to take action now.

Continuing to support you for as long as possible is our intention, but a time will come when it is no longer responsible to do so. We recommend that you not put this off, but instead switch to a system that software professionals will continue to support and develop, such as Magento 2 or Shopware.
