Less than nine weeks.
That’s what’s left before Black Friday, and it goes quicker than it sounds once you start writing down what needs doing. Hosting. Front end. Platform version. A checkout you’ve actually tested on a phone rather than assumed works.
Black Friday traffic doesn’t build gradually. The emails go out, and suddenly the site is busier than it has been all year. If the store slows down at that moment, you lose the people who came specifically to buy.
On Magento Open Source, much of that is within your control. You chose the hosting. You chose the theme. You decide when to upgrade. That’s a lot to be responsible for, and it’s also the reason nearly everything in this guide can still be changed before the end of November.
Our advice? Start with hosting. That’s the foundation your store runs on.
Ensure your hosting can handle the traffic spike
This is the layer that decides what happens when the traffic actually turns up. Three things matter here: caching, capacity and visibility.
Caching that’s already doing the work
Varnish sits in front of your store, and Redis works behind it, on every Hypernode plan. Between them, repeat requests are served from memory instead of being rebuilt by Magento each time, and that’s live before a single visitor arrives.
Hypernode says Varnish, Redis and full-page cache can make online shops up to 45% faster. Fewer requests reach the slower parts of your stack, which matters when thousands of shoppers hit the same product page at once.
Caching only helps if it’s hitting. Check that your homepage, category and product pages are actually being served from Varnish, rather than rebuilt every time.
Extra capacity when you need it
Vertical Autoscaling upgrades your plan automatically when your configured CPU threshold and duration are reached. The larger plan stays in place for 24 hours before your Hypernode returns to its regular plan.
It’s available on every plan. Set the threshold and duration now rather than trying to remember on the day.
If you’re on an eligible Cloud plan, Horizontal Autoscaling can add whole server instances on top of that. Check your eligibility before you plan around it.
Seeing what’s actually happening
Have monitoring in place before the day, not after. Hypernode Insights, now free with every hosting plan, gives you a live view of your infrastructure while it’s under load. If something starts going wrong, you can see it happening rather than finding out once the orders are lost.
Marketers get HTTP status codes and where traffic is coming from, which helps you see whether a campaign is sending traffic as expected. Developers get Magento-specific signals like Varnish hit rates and cron job success, which can be early signs of trouble.
None of this replaces testing your store beforehand.

Make sure your Hyvä front end is optimised
Running Hyvä doesn’t automatically mean your store is fast. It means the front end has the potential to be much lighter. Before Black Friday, check that you’ve actually realised that potential.
Why Hyvä matters more during Black Friday
A lot of Black Friday shopping happens on mobile, sometimes over a less-than-perfect connection. Every extra second your front end takes is another chance for someone to give up. This is where Hyvä earns its keep, if it’s set up properly.
What to check this week:
- You’re on a current Hyvä release.
- Your storefront extensions run through Hyvä compatibility modules, not old Luma JavaScript.
- Your homepage, a category page and a product page score well in PageSpeed Insights on mobile.
- Oversized images and third-party scripts aren’t dragging those scores back down.
Hypernode and Hyvä: built to work together
Hyvä makes the front end light. It can’t make the server answer faster. If the cache isn’t hitting, a Hyvä store can still feel slow, which is why the caching section above matters just as much as the theme.
Hypernode has been an official Hyvä hosting partner since 2025, so the infrastructure and front end are designed to work together.
Three months free to test Hypernode properly
If you’re already running Hyvä, or have a move to it on the roadmap, Hypernode is currently offering three months free on a Falcon M development environment. It’s a place to test changes properly, whether that’s tuning the store you already have or trialling a migration. You can learn more here.
Not on Hyvä yet?
A migration is a front-end rebuild, not a theme switch, and it can take several weeks depending on the complexity of your theme and extensions. With less than nine weeks left, this might be a job for after the sale.
Use the time for an extension audit instead, and sort the platform upgrade first, which is exactly what’s next.
Check your Magento and PHP versions
Magento 2.4.9 became the current release back in May 2026. If you’re on 2.4.8, don’t panic. The 2.4.8 release line is still supported, but make sure you’re running the latest security updates.
If you’re on 2.4.6 or older, though, that’s worth sorting sooner rather than later. The 2.4.6 release line reached end of regular support on 11 August 2026. An unsupported or unpatched store isn’t something you want to be carrying into your busiest weekend of the year.
2.4.9 asks more of your stack, so check that your PHP version, database and search engine are all supported before you commit to the upgrade. For 2.4.9, Adobe’s current requirements include PHP 8.5, MariaDB 12.3 or 11.8, and OpenSearch 3.
Weigh the timing, not just the version number
2.4.9 is a bigger jump than your average release. A fair bit changed under the hood, so some extensions will need a thorough check, and the underlying PHP, database and search engine requirements have changed too.
That’s exactly the kind of thing you want to find out on a test environment, with time to fix it, rather than live on the day.
Consider Hypernode’s Brancher
If you’re on Hypernode, Brancher comes in handy. Spin up a branch of your live store, throw the upgrade at it, and see what breaks without touching production.
If nothing does, great. If something does, you’ve found out in October, not on Black Friday.
TLDR: If you’re already on 2.4.8, there is a good case for waiting until after Black Friday to move up, provided you’re on the latest security updates. If you’re on something older, move to a supported release line now, and use staging to test the upgrade before touching production. Also, check out Brancher if you need a safe place to test the upgrade.
Checkout: where the sale is won or lost
You can get everything before this right; the hosting, the front end, the platform, and still lose the sale in the last thirty seconds. Checkout is where intent turns into revenue, or doesn’t.
A few things are worth testing before the day:
- Mobile checkout. Run through the entire process on a phone yourself. Test the fields, validation, payment flow and confirmation page.
- Express wallets. PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay can remove a lot of typing from mobile checkout. Make sure they’re enabled, working and tested on the devices your customers actually use.
- Local payment methods. Shoppers are more likely to complete a purchase when they can use payment options they’re familiar with. In the Netherlands, that’s iDEAL | Wero; in Belgium, Bancontact; in Germany, options such as invoice payment. Check that the methods relevant to each market are actually live.
- Guest checkout. Not every shopper wants to create an account, especially someone buying a single gift under time pressure. Make an account optional rather than mandatory.
- Discounts and shipping. Test your Black Friday codes, free-shipping thresholds and delivery messaging from start to finish. A promotion that works in the admin but fails at checkout isn’t much of a promotion.
- Fraud prevention. Peak shopping periods can also attract more fraud attempts. Make sure your controls can catch suspicious orders without creating unnecessary friction for everyone else.
Helping shoppers find what they want, fast
The best product in your catalogue is worth nothing if nobody can find it in the middle of Black Friday chaos. A few things are worth having in place:
Layered navigation
Filters for things like size, colour, brand and price can be built into Magento. The job is checking they’re configured properly, indexed, and showing the attributes your catalogue actually needs.
That’s an audit, not a build.
Search that can handle a typo
Out of the box, Magento’s native search is geared towards matching search terms, but it won’t reliably infer what someone meant by “hodie” instead of “hoodie”.
On Black Friday, when shoppers are moving quickly and often typing on a phone, that gap can lose you a sale outright. If you want typo tolerance on Magento Open Source, you’ll need a third-party search solution. Adobe Commerce users can also use Live Search.
Before adding one, check your search terms and add obvious misspellings you already see. If you do decide to add a search solution, start now: it touches the storefront, so you want time to test it, not a November rollout.
Inventory-aware filtering
Make sure out-of-stock products are handled the way you expect. Magento can hide them from category and search results, or show them with an out-of-stock message. Check the setting and verify it behaves correctly on your storefront.
Support that scales with traffic
Black Friday brings a spike in questions as well as orders. Make sure your support setup is ready for both.
- Refresh your chatbot’s scripts. Add Black Friday-specific coupon codes, shipping deadlines and return policy answers, so it can actually help during your busiest week rather than send everyone in circles.
- Set clear rules for when a bot hands off to a person. Decide which questions should go straight to a live agent, such as order status, payment problems and delivery complaints, and make sure that handoff happens automatically.
- Plan your live agent staffing for the actual peak. Whatever your chat volume looks like on a normal day, it will look different at 9 pm on Black Friday. Work out cover for those specific hours now.
Your pre-Black-Friday checklist
- Hosting: ask your host three things. Is full-page caching on and actually hitting your key pages? Does capacity scale automatically when load spikes? Can you see what’s happening live on the day? If not, consider Hypernode.
- Front end: on Hyvä, check you’re on a current release, your extensions run through compatibility modules, and PageSpeed on mobile shows good Core Web Vitals and no obvious performance issues. Not on Hyvä? Audit now, migrate after the sale.
- Platform: know your Magento version and security-patch level. 2.4.6 or older: move to a supported release line now. 2.4.8: make sure you’re fully patched, then test 2.4.9 on staging and decide.
- Checkout: run through it on a phone, test your Black Friday discounts and shipping rules, switch on guest checkout and express wallets, and check the payment methods relevant to each market.
- Search and filters: audit your layered navigation, check stock visibility, and decide now whether you’re adding a search extension.
- Support: update chatbot scripts, set handoff rules, and plan agent coverage for peak hours.
Less than nine weeks, one list. Work through it in that order, and you’ll have fewer surprises when the traffic arrives.
And if those three hosting questions weren’t answered the way you wanted, here’s how Hypernode handles Black Friday.
