The highlights of Magento 2.3

Yesterday Magento released version Magento 2.3 for both Magento Commerce and Magento Open Source. Magento 2.3 brings interesting new tools and features. Besides that, the new version offers bug fixes, security updates and performance improvements. In addition to this new release, there are also updates for Magento 1, Magento 2.1, and 2.2. These updates contain important security enhancements.

The most interesting new features and tools of Magento 2.3

Magento 2.3 offers a number of interesting tools and features that will support Magento developers in their everyday work. Let us highlight the most important ones for you.

PWA studio

An increasing number of visitors uses mobile devices to visit an online shop. A great opportunity, but shop experiences on mobile devices are rarely optimal, leading to lower conversion rates than desirable. Progressive Web Applications (PWAs) seem the answer. With a PWA users approach an online shop via their mobile browser and get a very user friendly experience, comparable to using an app. PWA Studio contains a suite of tools that allow developers to deploy and maintain a PWA storefront on top of Magento 2. Plus, PWA studio is open source and will be regularly updated, independent of Magento releases.

GraphQL API

With the arrival of Magento 2.3, developers can now use GraphQL. GraphQL is a flexible storefront API and an alternative to REST and SOAP APIs. Rumors say GraphQL combines the best of REST and SOAP. PWA studio (see above) uses GraphQL.

MultiSource Inventory (MSI)

MSI helps optimizing the complex operational side of e-commerce. MSI allows shop owners to create and manage all inventory sources within Magento without any third-party extensions or platforms. This functionality enables stock management in multiple locations. This way merchants can properly reflect their physical warehouses in Magento for fulfillment. For example, various inventory sources can be created and linked to one or more websites. This is very useful for merchants with both online and offline shops.

Declarative scheme

Declarative scheme facilitates the installation and upgrades of Magento and Magento extensions. With declarative scheme less database scripts are needed, so fewer scripts needs to be maintained. Also, the feature makes it possible to roll out database changes in the form of patch releases.

Other improvements

In addition to new features, Magento also shows a number of improvements in this latest version, including:

PHP 7.2 support

Magento 2.3 supports PHP 7.2. This PHP version contains new features and improvements that allows developers to write better code. PHP 7.2 is already available on the Hypernode platform.

Elasticsearch support

Support for search engine Elasticsearch has been extended to Magento Open Source. Prior to this release it was only available to Magento Commerce.

Additional security options

Magento 2.3 allows you to use Two-Factor Authentication (2FA). This way you can protect your admin panel against hackers who have intercept your admin password. Also new is Google reCAPTCHA, which protects your shop against bots that, for example, create fake accounts.
